As an Assistant Deli Manager, your rapid-pace dependability, leadership, and attention to detail will help the department meet its sales goals while providing satisfaction and nourishment to hundreds of shoppers every day.

The Assistant Deli Manager is responsible for assisting the Deli Manager in effectively managing the Deli Department to achieve financial targets outlined by the Store Manager; grow the department’s sales through outstanding customer service and excellence in merchandising; and supervising, supporting, and developing Deli staff members. This person will handle special projects assigned by the Deli Manager. This is a full-time position.

 

Responsibilities (assists the Deli Manager in the following):
 
  •      •  Assume management of the Deli Department in the absence of the Deli Manager.
  •      •  Assist the Deli Manager in the following areas:
  •      •  Managing financial goals set forth by the Store Manager and Director of Operations: sales, margins, and inventory.
  •      •  Performing key human resource functions: hiring and training new employees, documenting performance evaluations, issuing discipline, monitoring staff breaks, providing succession training, and completing supporting documentation in a timely manner.
  •      •  Effectively managing the staff of the Deli Department through quality training, regular open communication and meetings, clearly stating expectations, and an emphasis on each employee’s growth and development.
  •      •  Writing Deli schedule to effectively handle the department’s workflow while providing outstanding customer service.  
  •      •  Remaining within labor budget and minimizing overtime.
  •      •  Ensuring the delivery of consistent, outstanding customer service in the Deli Department that conforms to Customer Service Standards, including proper response to customer requests, suggestions, and feedback in a timely manner.
  •      •  Developing and maintaining an outstanding merchandising plan that addresses displays, promotions, cleanliness, new products, resets, and contributes to overall appearance of the store.
  •      •  Executing sales/promotions in a timely manner and working with the Catering Department on product samplings.  
  •      •  Working with the Scanning Coordinator to execute all Deli Department price changes and maintain signage.
  •      •  Managing purchasing function with respect to proper mix, order cycles, and order books.
  •      •  Ensuring all products meet quality standards through proper rotation and by only selling fresh product(s).
  •      •  Maintaining an abundant stock appearance while minimizing inventory.
  •      •  Managing shrink and monitoring credits through effective organization and follow through.
  •      •  Maximizing time spent on sales floor (minimum of 75% of scheduled hours).
  •      •  Promoting and maintaining a positive, clean and safe atmosphere for employees and customers.
  •      •  Conducting perishable inventories of the Deli Department.
  •      •  Assisting team members in achieving the goals of the Deli Department and the store.
  •      •  Know store layout/product location to walk the customer to the appropriate aisle when asked.
  •      •  Adhere to and enforce all Deli Department and Store policies as outlined by the Deli Manager, Staff Member Handbook and Injury and Illness Prevention Plan.
  •      •  Use protective personal equipment (PPE) as required.
  •      •  Perform general cleaning and keep working areas in neat and safe manner.
  •      •  All other duties as assigned or required.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:
 
  •      •  None.

 

Qualifications:
  •      •  High school diploma or equivalent.
         •  Three to five (3-5) years previous experience in a management role in a grocery store is preferred.
         •  Must have the ability to understand and follow Department of Health regulations and will need to be able to obtain Food Handler’s Certification. 
         •  General knowledge of Deli Department operations (margins, ordering, inventory control, merchandising, personnel management).
         •  Excellent customer service, communication, and organizational skills.
         •  Leadership and team-building skills with the ability to coach, motivate, supervise, delegate, and constructively address performance issues.
         •  Friendly and outgoing personality.
         •  Strong organizational, problems solving, and follow up skills.
         •  Eye for detail.
         •  Professional presentation and attitude.
         •  Ability to maintain focus.
         •  Strong time management skills.
         •  Must be results production-oriented with excellent communication skills using diplomacy and discretion.
         •  Strong customer service skills.  
         •  Ability to work as a team player in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, meet deadlines, and handle adverse situations.
